Types of Braces

Learn more about the different types of braces available.

Metal

With all of the new technologies, metal braces are still the most widely used among Orthodontists to correct misaligned teeth or malocclusions. They are made of high grade metals mostly stainless steel. Metal Braces are fixed appliances, made up of brackets, wires and bands. The metal bracket is bonded to the tooth with tooth colored adhesive. The bracket has a slot in which an arch wire is placed. The orthodontist then uses the bracket (fixed position) and the arch wire and bands (both adjustable) to apply forces that move the teeth over time.

Ceramic

The basic structure and function of ceramic braces is very similar to metal braces, they are made up of brackets, wires and bands. However, ceramic braces have brackets made of composite materials rather than metal which blend with the natural color of your teeth and so are considered a more cosmetic option. Ceramic braces are strong because but have a higher degree of friction which can make them more brittle. The usage of ceramic braces is determined by the severity of your bite. In most situations ceramic brackets tend to be a little more expensive than metal brackets. They are popular in many adult cases due to the fact that they are more aesthetic.

Invisible

Progressive, clear removable aligners, like Invisalign or Invisalign Teen, use a series of clear, comfortable, removable retainers to gradually move the position of your teeth. They are easy to use and in some case less painful than traditional braces, plus have the benefit of being near invisible so no one knows you are wearing them. With Invisalign, the Orthodontist plans the patients tooth movement with 3D computer imaging. This allows the patient and Doctor to see 3D images of their current bite as well as the end result of treatment. Invisalign uses high technology stereo lithography or SLA manufacturing to create a series of custom aligners for each patient which gradually move the teeth and are practically invisible when worn. Unlike traditional braces Invisalign can be removed when you eat, drink, brush, and floss. Invisalign has treated more than 1,000,000 patients and has a 96% patient satisfaction rating.
