Traditional orthodontic metal braces are made up of brackets, which are cemented to the teeth, an arch wire which is shaped to exert pressure on the teeth and then tied or ligated to the bracket with a ligature which is normally either rubber or metal. Self-ligating brackets have an integrated clip system used to attach or ligate the arch wire rather than a metal or rubber ligature. This type of bracket requires less maintenance (rubber donuts/ligatures require regular replacement) and applies a consistent force with less friction, which many orthodontists believe makes this type of bracket quicker and less painful.
